Want something a bit different to the diode clipping overdrives. The Mozztronics JD-1 JFET Drive is the answer. The JFET is a type of transistor that operates in a similar way to a vacuum tube.
The Mozztronics JD-1 JFET Drive operates in pure Class A, using three stages of JFET goodliness to accurately simulate an entire low wattage amp. There are no diodes in the audio signal path, and no diode clipping in this unit, just nice smooth JFET compressive dirt and overdrive.
GAIN controls the amount of gain from the first stage, TONE controls the amount of treble in the output, from treble cut to treble boost, and VOLUME adjusts the overall volume out of the pedal.
This is great for crunch rhythm tones, and gives nice drive sounds when driven hard. This is great in combination with the TD-1 tube driver for a really smooth lead sound. We suggest using the JD-1 before the TD-1 Tube Driver or EX-1 Expandrive in the signal chain and set the JD-1 for crunch rhythm, and the TD-1 or EX-1 for lead, but there are no hard and fast rules. Experiment with the order of your effects to find what you like.
I especially like using a bit of treble boost, and setting the GAIN so when you play softly you get a nice clean jangly sound, but when you dig in a bit the compressive JFET dirt kicks in.
The JD-1 JFET Drive pedal can also be used as an always on pedal. Set the gain lowish and turn the output volume up to add a touch of sparkle. Many people like the “echopl*x” for the way its preamp sounds, and the JD-1 JFET Drive pedal can do the same job in many applications.
It can also be used as a booster as there is a lot of output level available. Set the gain low to keep it clean and turn the output volume up to the desired boost level. If you want massive boost, the BB-1 Big Boost is the go to pedal with 27dB of gain.
